Summary

Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) is in compliance with this comprehensive standard.  FTCC ensures user access to regular and timely instruction in library and other learning/information resources on all campus locations including online students.

Narrative

Three librarians staff the Paul H. Thompson Library. They conduct orientations, respond to faculty requests, and provide assistance to students. A library staff member is available Monday through Saturday on main campus. FTCC and the Cumberland County Public Library has an agreement to provide a librarian at the Spring Lake Branch Library to conduct orientations and provide support and instructional services for Spring Lake Campus students. Library Hours are posted on the library home page and throughout the Paul H. Thompson Library building. Online students may access library via Ask-A-Librarian.

During the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the library held 117 orientations for 2,251 students on the main campus.  Over the past year, librarians provided individual library instruction/assistance to include 4,633 brief instructions (lasting from one to three minutes) and 3,727 extensive instructions (lasting over three minutes). The 2008-2009 Library Annual Statistical Report is found on the library home page. The 2007-2008 Library Annual Statistical Report is available for comparative data. From 2008-2009, the reference librarian serving the Spring Lake campus and Fort Bragg classes responded to 268 general reference questions, periodical requests, and the use of electronic database (which is reported in the main campus data). The 2008-2009 North Carolina Higher Education Academic Library Survey reports usage, collection size, and status and financial information for the FTCC library services.

The automated library catalog includes information about the books, audiovisual materials, and periodicals that the Paul H. Thompson Library owns, as well as the holdings of 46 other community college libraries in North Carolina that are available upon request by parties from the 46 member libraries in the consortia, (NCCCLRA).

Results from student, faculty and staff surveys are used to assess library effectiveness annually. The 2008-2009 Faculty/Administration/Staff Support Services Survey and the Current Student Survey provide documentation of user satisfaction.

Library staff conducts orientations for the new faculty and staff. They also provide one-on-one assistance and classroom support.  Librarians also provide tours to acquaint the faculty and staff with library resources.

The Success Center participates in freshman orientations, classroom presentations and academic intervention.

The Media Services personnel assist students, faculty, and staff with the reservation, delivery, and repair of our Multimedia support equipment, video conferencing, and on-campus distribution of Satellite Teleconferences. They also duplicate media materials, provide photographic and production support, and maintain the college’s videotape and film libraries.
