Summary

Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) is in compliance with this comprehensive standard. There is a clear definition of academic freedom and grievance procedures to safeguard and protect academic freedom at this institution.

Narrative

Fayetteville Technical Community College demonstrates compliance with this comprehensive standard. The policy concerning academic freedom is located in the Faculty Handbook (II-3.4)

Fayetteville Technical Community College is committed to the principle of academic freedom. This principle acknowledges the right of a teacher to explore fully within the field of his/her subject as he/she believes to represent the truth. The principle also includes the right of a member of academic staff of the system to exercise in speaking, writing, and action outside the system the ordinary rights of an American citizen, but it does not decrease the responsibility and accountability which the member of the academic staff bears to the System, the State, and the Nation.

In terms of safeguarding and protecting academic freedom, FTCC’s grievance procedure (Employment and Affirmative Action Manual, VI-7.1) outlines the process where the President convenes an Ad Hoc Committee to conduct hearings on the grievance For student grievances, the Student Handbook and the Academic Procedures Manual, III-10.1 outline the appeals process through the department chair, academic dean, and the Student Appeals Committee. Illustrating the College’s commitment to academic freedom, the college has had no violations or allegations from students or faculty.
